Originally intended to be a run of 100, but I stopped around 18 because they had done their job, these are all vintage photographs, mostly found, the eyes area are masked with fluid they are then painted with a wash of red acrylic paint, dried, the masking removed and typed over with two statements one being a constant "Today, I am a stronger man" the other being from a notebook and each is numbered.
A moment of growth happened, I needed to rid myself of the chrysalis of abuse manufactured by a narcissist that I had lived with for 20 years. When I emerged life went dark for a brief but intense moment. My nights were plagued by a repeated vivid dream of waking up covered in my own blood, my days were a barrage of abuse. There were moments when there was no future in my mind, I was broken, alone, and under attack. So... I decided to make art of it, art that reflected the pain and the power of growing from that pain. I wrote the barbed curses in a notebook changing them from 'You' to 'I' statements and typed them over these prepared photos, I then also typed 'Today, I am a stronger man'. and erased the 'I' statements from the book the spell is broken with the repeated mantra heald witnessed by the subject of the photo, the faces of people who had lived their own lives and had their sufferings and joys.
